Thank You for Creating a Fundraising Page

Welcome and Thank You!

Thank you for choosing to give your time and energy to help make our Support-A-Walk for Breast & Ovarian Cancer a success. We are so grateful for your help! The purpose of this blog is to share some ideas and tips to make it easier for you to help us make this year's Walk the best one ever!

The Support-A-Walk has TWO important missions: To raise funds needed for the FREE help Support Connection gives to those whose lives have been turned upside down by breast or ovarian cancer; and to bring attention to the needs of people affected by these diseases. Our hope is that one day there will be no need for such events, but until that time, Support Connection's goal is that no one should walk this path alone.

Firstgiving Post-Walk Update

We have some important news to share: YOUR FUNDRAISING PAGE CONTINUES TO ACCEPT DONATIONS THROUGH THE END OF THIS YEAR! This means you can continue to request and receive donations even though the Walk has taken place.

Here are some ideas for fundraising AFTER the Walk:

DIDN'T MEET YOUR GOAL? Ask people to help you reach it!

WERE YOU AT THE WALK? Tell people what an amazing morning it was, and why. If you took photos, put one on your fundraising page.

TRIBUTE DONATIONS: Inform people they can donate in honor or memory of someone in their life.

THANK YOU'S: Don't forget to thank those who donated. Tell them the impact they've had on thousands of people fighting breast and ovarian cancer, and ask them to forward your page to others who may want to help.

In all correspondence, let people know your page is still accepting donations and the sky's the limit!

REMEMBER: Always include the link to YOUR fundraising page. It's at the top of YOUR page and starts with www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/YOURPAGENAME/walk2015.....

It's Almost Here! The Direct Approach

Hello Firstgiving fundraisers! We're now less than TWO WEEKS AWAY from the 21st Annual Support-A-Walk on October 4th.That means it's time to be direct about asking people to donate. It's not too late!!

We rely on YOU to help us reach our fundraising goal! The funds you raise enable our Peer Counselors to provide year-round support to those living with breast and ovarian cancer.Your donations will make a difference in many lives.

THE DIRECT APPROACH: Send out reminders and spread the word! People forget even when they really want to help. Here are some tips:

THE POWER OF 20: If only 20 people donate $20 each, that's $400! Let everyone know their donation makes a difference. Tell them WHY this is important to you - what drives you to raise funds.

SEND OUT EMAILS:  Email every person in your personal email account. Write a note about why you're fundraising. "Copy & paste" the URL or page address of your Firstgiving page. (It's at the TOP of your page, and looks like this: http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser....) Your friends and family can click the link, see your page and donate.  For a sample email click here.

SEND EMAILS THROUGH FIRSTGIVING: Firstgiving has great email tools: While viewing YOUR fundraising page, click the Email Icon at the top, then simply create your email. (If you use Gmail, Yahoo, AOL or Hotmail, you'll find easy shortcuts!) OR: SIGN IN to your account at Firstgiving.com, select "Edit," then "Send your page via email." Follow the steps to add email addresses and send your messages!

SHARE ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Share your page on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other places you keep in touch with people. A few friendly reminders will encourage them to join your efforts. While viewing YOUR fundraising page, look at the top left to find share buttons for Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. OR: SIGN IN to your account at Firstgiving.com, select "Edit," then "Post your page" on Facebook or Twitter.

TEE-SHIRTS:If you've earned a Walk tee-shirt ($50 for the first shirt, $25 for each additional shirt) you need to pick it up at the office before the Walk. Click here for office hours. Share this with your Team Members too.

Keep the Momentum Going

Our 21st Annual Support-A-Walk on October 4th is LESS THAN three weeks away! We are so grateful for your support of our free services and programs. We do NOT receive funds from Relay for Life, the Avon Walk, Making Strides, Susan G. Komen, or any other national groups. By raising funds for our Support-A-Walk, you enable us to help countless women and their families cope with breast & ovarian cancer!

Now's the time to keep the momentum going! Here are some tips to help boost your fundraising:

Keep It Simple: Send an email from your own email account (Outlook, AOL, Gmail, etc.) asking friends and family to donate. Tell them the address of your fundraising page (It's at the TOP of your page, and looks like this: http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser....) Keep your email short and simple! Need ideas on what to say? Click here!

Tell A Story: Personalize your page with a photo and a little bit about why you're passionate about our cause. Your page will speak for itself. To see a great example, look at Maria's page

Share on Social Media: Share your page on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. A few friendly reminders will encourage people to join your efforts. There are TWO ways to do this:
  1. While viewing YOUR fundraising page, you'll see share buttons on the top left for Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Email.
  2. OR....SIGN IN to your account at Firstgiving, then select "Edit" to find additional sharing tools.
Let Our Videos And Audio Speak For You: Let people SEE and HEAR what the Walk is like and why it's important!  Share this 30-second message from Karen, one of our Walk Ambassadors: http://tinyurl.com/messagefromKaren, just copy and paste this web address into your emails.   Or share our YouTube videos.

Your Email Signature: Add your fundraising page address to your email signature, along with a message (e.g. "I'm raising funds for breast and ovarian cancer support - please donate!") Your message is now in every email you send. It's a simple way to remind people!

Thank you!

The Art of Gentle Reminders

Hello Firstgiving fundraisers! We're now about THREE WEEKS AWAY from the Support-A-Walk on October 4th. That means it's time to remind family and friends about your fundraising.

As of right now, we have 103 fundraising pages. Of those, only 59 pages (or 57%) have received donations. Remember: The funds you raise enable our Peer Counselors to provide year-round support to those living with breast & ovarian cancer. We rely on your donations-we can't do it without you!

How long ago did you send your email asking for donations? The people you reached out to may have put it in their "to do" pile and left it there! It's time to send a gentle reminder about the Walk and your fundraising efforts. Our most successful fundraisers give family & friends plenty of chances to donate.

Here's an example of what you might say:

Dear Friends,

I hope you had a great summer. I want to give you a brief update on my efforts to raise funds for the Support-A-Walk. So far, I've raised $__ but I still have a ways to go to reach my goal of $___. I'm hoping you'll help by making a donation.

With our help, Support Connection can continue to change lives by providing FREE support services to those living with breast and ovarian cancer. They can't do it without us.

To donate, click on this link for my fundraising page: http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/etc... It really is quick and secure. Thank you in advance for your help!

Feel free to personalize this message. The point is: Remind people you need their help!

Didn't send any emails yet? This is a perfect time to start! For a sample email asking for donations, click here.

"Offline Donations": Some people prefer to donate by cash or check. That's fine!! Track these donations with our collection form then bring or send to Support Connection, 40 Triangle Center, Suite 100, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598. Or, tell people to send to us directly. You can add these funds to your Firstgiving page as "offline donations." Need help? Contact us: 914-962-6402 or walk@supportconnection.org

Have you come close to your fundraising goal? That's fantastic, THANK YOU! Consider increasing your goal. Whatever your goal, let everyone know you really want to reach or exceed it.

Thank you!

It's OK to Ask

Hello again to all of our Firstgiving fundraisers. Summer is almost over, which means our 21st Annual Support-A-Walk on October 4th will be here soon! So far we have 59 Firstgiving fundraisers. Of those, 26 fundraisers have reached out for donations and have collectively raised more than $18,000.

Do you feel hesitant to ask others to donate? Don't worry- it's okay to ask! Most people are happy to support a good cause. Here are some tips to help you:

INSPIRATION: Donors consider it a gift to participate in something bigger than themselves. Tell people enthusiastically about why you're involved - they will be inspired and excited to give!

STORIES: Some fundraisers choose to tell personal stories to encourage others to support us. Maybe Support Connection has helped you or someone you know. If you wish, you can tell your story on your Firstgiving page. (Here are some great examples: Barbara's page and Marisa's page. OR, you can share these more personal details in the emails you send.

IMPACT Donors like to know their contribution has an impact. Use these quick facts about Support Connection to let people know their donations will make a REAL difference:
  • Close to 90¢ of every dollar donated goes directly towards our free breast & ovarian cancer support services.
  • ALL of our services and programs are provided FREE of charge: counseling, support groups, educational programs, wellness classes, resource referrals.
  • Each year, our Peer Counselors help more than 600 different people. Many people come back to us multiple times.
  • Our services are unlimited. We're here as often as you need us, for as long as you need us.
  • We do NOT receive funds from ANY national cancer organizations. Your donations enable us to do what we do.
Now you can ask! There are several ways to reach out:
  • YOUR PERSONAL EMAIL ACCOUNT: Send your message to all your contacts. Remember to include the URL or page address of your fundraising page.  It's at the top of your page and looks like this: http://www.firstgiving/fundraiser/YOUR PAGE NAME/walk2015.
  • YOUR FIRSTGIVING ACCOUNT: Firstgiving has great email tools! Login to your account atwww.firstgiving.com.  Select "Edit", then "Send your page via email."  Follow the steps to add email addresses then send your messages.
  • SOCIAL MEDIA: Login to your account at www.firstgiving.com. Select "Edit" then look for easy ways to share via Facebook and Twitter. OR, View your own page and use the share icons on the top left side.

Thank you!

Beating the Summertime Blues

Hello again to all of our Firstgiving fundraisers. It's hard to believe, but summer is almost over. Our 21st Annual Support-A-Walk on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015 will be here before you know it! We now have  41 Firstgiving fundraisers. Of those, 18 fundraisers have reached out for donations and have raised more than $14,000 altogether.

Remember: The funds you raise help women with breast and ovarian cancer and their families receive support from our Peer Counselors all year long. Support Connection relies on these donations - they enable us to do what we do!

Asking for donations in the summer can be challenging. You may find your friends and family are away on vacation enjoying a break from work and school.

Here are 3 activities you can do now to take advantage of the summertime lull:

PERSONALIZE YOUR FUNDRAISING PAGE: You can:
  • Add a picture.
  • Write a personal message explaining why you're raising money for Support Connection. (For a great example, click here  to see Maria's fundraising page.)
DRAFT A REMINDER EMAIL: Reminders are important! We all put things off and need a "nudge" now and then. So:
  1. Draft an email now, reminding friends and family about your fundraising.
  2. Send it right after Labor Day when everyone is back and ready to move into action.
ADJUST YOUR FUNDRAISING GOAL: Are you close to your original goal, or have you already surpassed it? Awesome! That means people are eager to support you. So:
  • Consider changing your goal and revising your message to let people know how happy you are to receive such great response.
  • Reach out to your supporters and encourage them to join your efforts by sharing your page with others they know.
 Thank you!

There's Power in Numbers

Hello again to all of our Firstgiving fundraisers. We are so grateful for your efforts on behalf of our 21st Annual Support-A-Walk on Sunday, October 4, 2015!

DID YOU KNOW? Support Connection does NOT receive funds from Relay for Life, the Avon Walk, Making Strides, Susan G. Komen, or any other national groups. We rely on YOUR donations to provide critically needed support services to women with breast and ovarian cancer and their families - all FREE of charge. So thank you!

THERE'S POWER IN NUMBERS!
Fundraising is easy when you REACH OUT to others. Here are some tips to increase your fundraising power:

SMALL DONATIONS ADD UP WHEN YOU TARGET DIFFERENT GROUPS.
You don't need to ask for large donations when you think about all the different people you can ask. Check out these ideas:

Five Easy Steps to Raise $500:
  1. Donate $50 to your own page.
  2. Ask 2 family members to donate $50.
  3. Ask 10 friends to contribute $20.
  4. Ask 2 businesses that you frequent to donate $50.
  5. Ask your boss for a company donation of $50.
Five More Easy Steps to Reach $1,000:
  1. Ask 3 more family members to donate $50.
  2. Ask 5 co-workers to contribute $20.
  3. Ask 5 neighbors to donate $20.
  4. Ask 5 people from your place of worship for $10.
  5. Ask 10 people in your social circles (book club, gym, carpool) for $10.
YOU CAN ALSO ASK FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO JOIN YOUR TEAM:
Give them the link to YOUR fundraising page, and tell them to:
  1. Click "Join Team" on the bottom right side of the page.
  2. Follow the steps to set up their own fundraising page.
  3. Your Team name will be on their page!

How to Ask for Donations

Thank you again for creating a Firstgiving page to raise funds for the21st Annual Support-A-Walk on October 4, 2015! Your participation will help women with breast and ovarian cancer and their families receive support and services from our Peer Counselors, who are fellow survivors.

HAVE YOU ASKED PEOPLE TO DONATE YET? It's never too early  to start! We rely on these donations year-round to sustain our free services. So far, we have 18 Firstgiving fundraisers. Of those, only 7 fundraisers have reached out for donations and have already raised almost $7000.

Need tips about asking for donations? Here are just a few:

ASK EVERYONE YOU KNOW: Email everyone in your address book and ask them to donate.Remember to include the URL to your fundraising page. ("http: //www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/etc....") For ideas on what to say, click here.

TELL EVERYONE WHY YOU CARE: One woman wrote on her page "Without Support Connection, my incredibly difficult journey would not have as many high points. It is important to me that this resource is available to others, and your donation will make that happen." She explained her personal connection to our cause. Maybe you or someone you know has been affected by breast or ovarian cancer. Maybe you've volunteered for us. Maybe you just want to make a difference in the lives of the people we help. Share your commitment, your passion!

SET A GOAL: Choose a fundraising goal (you can post it on your page) then ask people to help you meet it. Set a goal you think you can reach. As you get close, update friends and family; ask them to help you reach or surpass it!

ENCOURAGE DONATIONS OF ALL AMOUNTS: One young lady raised $500 in one week by telling her friends: "If everyone could donate $5, it would make a huge difference." She compared a $5 donation to the cost of a sandwich. (PS: Plenty of people donated MORE than $5!)

Thank you!
